Do they still make these?

Afternoon all. Just been to a small job, replacing bits and bobs. Came across a recessed fluorescent fitting that did not work (ancient). Anyway the 5ft fluorescent lamp has 2 bayonet fittings at either end. Do they still make these? If so where could I purchase one? Checked TLC etc with no luck. Cheers. J

Just looked in a couple of lamp catalogues, usually do pretty much every lamp available, and no. Thought it would be no anyway.

Either replace the fittings or fit new control gear and wiring if they don;t want the old ones ripping out. You can either order the bits and swap the guts over order the bits seperately and fit the tubes in clips with loose end caps or fir universal end caps that can just be screwed to anything. Clips and loose endcaps is usually easiest.

Thanks Lurch. Would the current control gear work with a normal fluorescent tube if I where to change the end caps??? Dont see why not but seen as Ive never done this before, thaught Id ask. :D J

Yes, but given the age of it I'd replace it. A new set of control gear will make the fitting more efficient, and the tubes will probably last longer, and will save the call next week to say the choke has gone!

There are 6 others in the room, so If I replaced the control gear, one of them would be nice an bright and the others yellow and manky. And I cant see 86 year old "mrs Jones" agreeing to replacing the lot. :D J

I see your point! Wipe the tube with some old crap from behind the cooker first, should dim it down with a nice yellowy greasy tint.

The new one will be brighter anyway, regardless of old or new control gear.

The fittings must be verging on ancient. BC tubes were discontinued in the late 70s/early 80s. Thorn used to make a BC to Bi-pin adaptor but that's probably long gone now.

Given the probably age of the fittings the gear losses must be high due to the degregration of the copper windings in the chokes. Replacing them would be the only sensible option.

Right, Ill brace myself ready for when she wraps her handbag around my neck when I tell her they all need replacing. "But the rest are working fine..." :D
