now then all

Is there a rule of thumb or reg to quantify

1./ what level of renovation/extra wiring or whatever requires you to fit some form of fire detection. (All i can find in ECA literature is major renovations, I always fit some detection if I'm rewiring, that's all)

2./ If you do commit to doing it what is the minimum (once again i usually put a smoke in hall and at each landing and usually a heat in kitchen) but have seen quotations for rewire with no FD at all???

Don't often quote for work but like to be on an even playing field when i do and also like to be able to quote some reg/rule when i advise.

There was a recommendation for smoke detectors to be included in any major refurb as you say . We took that as meaning a rewire and have been including them for the last 5 years . Building regs kick in when sleeping accomodation is formed in an attic, say.

I think what you usually fit is excellent , making the house much safer than before you came.

cheers

so if you are quoting for say an extension with SD's on the BC plans you would quote to install them in the new parts only and ignore the existing parts of the house

Any extention would normally come under buiding regs, one of the regulations that I see on drawings are the inclusion of smoke detectors, this would mean interlinked. So if no smoke detectors are in the old part of the building I would quote to install them.

Yeah any extensions or renovations i always try and get as many smokes in as i can but like the op said i get the main 3 in all the time.
