I was called out to a job today by a landlord who was concerned that the door entry was'nt working in one of his flats.

Eventually after a lot of messing about and fob offs, I got the tenant to let me into the flat so I could have a look.

He'd only gone and removed the handset, snipped the 3 pair cable and put a large mirror on the wall over where the handset used to be !.

Anyway my question (having not worked on door entry systems for at least 10 years) is.... can I just order any make of handset or do I need to go back and inspect the control panel to see what make that is ? Will any make of handset work regardless of who manufactured the rest of the equipment?

I cannot remember for sure what the 3 pairs are for, I have a feeling one pair is for the buzzer, another for the speech and the last one for the door lock ?...

If anyone can enlighten me on those 2 points I would be very grateful... ta very much.

hi Revved up , door entry systems come in 2 guises: 2wire or 5 wire .so as long as you have enough wires going to each location, then I think you can go with one with the relevant wire numbers. hope this helps.

i would say try and get 1 from the same manufacturer if possible, i dont do door entry much we have a guy that does it all day every day.do you know any details of the system and i can ask him for some help if no one else comes up with ideas for you.

Cheers for the help, much appreciated, no I was in a bit of a hurry and forgot to inspect the panel (doh).... I will probably go back for another look tomorrow.

I'd get the proper handset or you could be in for all sorts of problems..

there is a website that specialises in them IIRC

Oooooppps

talking rubbish...

have a look here

Yes some of the older ones dont work with the newer panels and vice versa, had a few problems so best to get a match if you can maybe not even same supplier just same type. And no cant remember any of the details of types sorry.

If its a 5 wire system any handset will work. However, it would be easier to work out the colour code if you had the same make & could see another phone.

The 5 connections are

TX (transmit speech)

RX (receive speech)

Common

Call (handset buzzer)

Lock release.

I favour the Bell systems handsets as they have a nice warble, rather than that horrible screeching buzzer most handsets have. They also 'warble' at the outside panel to let the caller know something is happening when the call button is pressed.

Wonder if the landlord will pass the bill on as it is basically vandalism
