Hello and I hope all's going well. B-)

Q. How should one best convert a flush mounted double socket to a surface mounted (metalclad) double socket?

Is there an alternative to filling in the existing hole and then drilling through the filler (to reach brickwork again) to attach the surface box?

I sense the answer will be obvious :coat

Thank you for any advice.

Block of wood in old back box, screw to that?

That's an interesting one, thank you. I'm not sure that the base of the metalclad box would conceal the edges of the gap though. :(

Sounds a daft question but why do you want to change from a flush mounted to a surface metalclad?

Because I like the rugged durable can-take-hard-knocks industrial look! :^O

That'll be like a bodybuilder wearing no pants. (Sorry, that was the first thought I had.)

That was a good tip though. Cheers :)

You could use an MK 2004 Alm box , its oversize so covers the flush box and takes their flush twin SSO satin chrome . Its possible to drill holes at fixing centres and screw it to the flush box with 3.5mm screws, although awkward because the holes will be behind the fixing lugs on the new box, but can be done.
