Hi All

A customer wants me to install four down lights to his new shower room, they want the ceiling clad in that UPVC stuff. I have seen people with this combination, but until now never thought about it.

I wondered if the heat from the light would melt the UPVC?

The lights are supplied by JCC, mains voltage, 50w, fire rated, IP65.

Is it fine to fit them in UPVC or is it a no no?

I welcome your thoughts.

youll find most are only 50w on non-flammable surface. on flammable surface, 35W max. and if you put a 50W in, it will melt the plastic.

not a problem fiting into plastic ceilings. i usually do 2 bathrooms per week. usually 4, sometimes 5 or 6 on larger rooms

put a few into plastic, but only ever install 35w max and note on the cert that when replacing 35 watts should be used.

Don't do it. Advise them to fit something better for a ceiling.

I fitted some for a customer a while back. I didn't like the look of it when I saw it and advised the ceiling material was not a good idea and I would not be held responsible for the quality of the finished job.

No problem drilling a hole and no problem fitting the downlights.

BUT shortly after they had a minor fire (not related) and as a result, the downlights needed changing due to minor smoke damage.

That was when it all went wrong. Getting the old ones out, cracked the plastic around the edge of the hole, so when fitting the replacements one of them now has a rough edge of oversized hole showing.

So please, try and convince your customer this material is rubbish, and stick to something better like simple plasterboard, or wood (you can always paint wood gloss white if that's the finish they want.
