well if its got caps then its single phase... so most likely 230v...

but if the cap did fail, then it may be possible that the motor then couldnt spin, it got hot and let its smoke out

The other thing you need to consider is the speed, 2 pole or 4 pole.

Depending on what you are looking for a brand new warranted unit can be had for circa £150 in 1.5kW flange mount 2 pole.

A rewind on that ebay unit would be more than that if it is needed.

Andy is right, how could the seller know it was only the cap, when they bought a new motor???? They would have had to buy a cap as well, fit it, and then try the old motor....
There are ways to tell John, but they are cheats or require testing, as you well know! ;)

and the 'I bought a whole new motor when I only needed to replace the cylinder' doesnt make much sense either.... if he knew he 'only needed to replace the cylinder', why would he bother replacing the motor. its broke, and he knows it. hopefully no-one will be stupid enough to buy it

the dual voltage name plate relates to the external delta or star connection, 230 delta 400 star.

it DOES NOT mean you can connect it to a single phase supply.

wire it as a 400v DOL star connected circuit.

Pepparz,

If it is a 3ph motor, why does it have capacitors?

Oh and the Y/D connection will not be external on such a small 3ph motor, the winding configuration will be done in the motor terminal box with the links.

I doubt that this unit is 3ph though.

To be honest the ad is pretty short on the critical information for such a unit.

Hopefully the OP will have second thoughts, mind, @99p if it was free shipping, he might make a profit taking it to the scrappy! ;)

you might be right sidewinder, i missed the capacitor bit, but usually if a dual voltage motor that shows around 220-240v on its name plate, it doesn't mean can be supplied by single phase.
