E, 1 and 2 wire connectors

Hi there

We have just taken down an old ceiling light fitting, and my typical husband has not taken note of which wire went where. 
 

The connection on the ceiling bracket are E, 1 and 2. We are unsure what 1 and 2 mean? The bracket is stuck in the ceiling (we can’t get it out) and there are no wires to be seen, just the entry points for the wires. 
 

Can anyone help us identify what these 1 and 2 are?? Thank you.

This sounds like one of those ceiling roses where you can unplug the pendant part.  If so you CAN unscrew the fixed part from the ceiling which will reveal the cables connected to it.

But a picture will confirm that.
