Ebay: ending an item early.

Hi chaps,

A quick 1 for the ebay specialists.

I'm currently selling something on ebay and it is my first sale so I dont know the rules inside out. I have had 3 people ask me for a buy it now price and to end it early but there are also a number of bidders on the item. 1 has even offered an amount that i'm more than happy to accept.

The thing is I dont know were I stand on this. I would've thought it was unfair to end an item early that has active bidders on it. Does anybody know the ruling.

I asked a chap the same thing a few weeks ago for an item I really wanted and he told me he couldn't do as there was bidder on it even though i told him the bidder was me. I don't know if this was due to terms or whether it was just him.

Any info on the matter would be appreciated, cheers

It is in the rules that you cannot do that. But I have yet to see anyone who stick to the rules.

If you have bids; it would be unfair to end it early. It is totally upto you Mate, it is your decision.

It also depends on how long you have got left on the listing, mate.

I'll not always offer a Buy It Now for the simple reason eBay fees are getting ridiculous so will end an item early after a Buy It Now offer. Not technically to the rules but no different to having a BIN on the item. I've ended items with bids on, I think one of the options is 'item no longer for sale', which it isn;t so that's that really. All down to you, I've had it done to me and I've done it myself, it goes on quite a lot.

If I was a bidder I'd be sending negative feedback TBH , after watching the item for days its hardly fair to suddenly flog it off .

You can;t leave feedback unless you won the item, and that's just the way eBay works TBH, not much you can do about it.

Be very careful accepting an offer from someone who has contacted you about an item. It is rife for scammers to get you to end your item early and then you never hear from them again. If you believe they are serious, get them to pay via PayPal (or be in receipt of a postal order [NOT a cheque]) BEFORE you end the auction. Be aware that even if they do pay by Paypal they can instigate a chargeback afterwards, by which time you might already have posted the item out, so they get the item for free.

You can end an item early even if it has bids provided you do so with more than 12hrs to go. With less than 12hrs to go (and if there are bids) you cannot end the item. All you could do is let it run and then decline to sell to the highest bidder - but you're likely to get negative feedback.

I will not entertain ending an item early for an emailed offer. don't even respond to the question. Let the auction run it's course and take what I get. You could report a member for asking you to end early. I've usually got more in the auction than was offered anyway (mostly).

Also I think you can see from a sellers profile how many items they end early. I won't buy from anyone who habitually does so.

a friend of mine, sells second hand cars from home, he has ended approx 8 cars in the last few months before the auction end due to some one coming to see the car and offering him a price he couldnt refuse, he has only yesterday been banned from ebay for breach of there terms and conditions. banned from selling for 3 months.

suppose he could just set up another account but hes been using that account for over 8 years and sells plenty of motors on there so has great feedback.

so im guessing you shouldnt do it, but i would if it was me on 1 item i cant see any problem

Cheers for the input guys. The item is the top half of a laptop. Screen and lid etc. Only put it on yesterday and within a few hours had 15 watchers and 3 buy it now request messages. 1 chap asked if I had the rest of system which I told him what I had etc and he come back with a decent offer for the lot. This is the 1 I'm interested in. The offer is tempting and the guy seems genuine but alot could go pear shaped and obviously it wouldn't happen under ebays umberella. From what has been said I think I will let it run it's course on the auction. I wouldn't like it if someone did it to me if I really wanted the item.

Your call, I'd have no problems in doing it, however obviously I'm not saying you should just end it early and sell to anyone. I trust my judgement of the person offering me money and that is something I can;t decide for you over the internet tubes.

have just been looking. if you add this item is listed elesewhere so i rerserve the right to remove if sold elsewhere you seem to be able to get around there terms. lots of items with that wording.. you could allways edit listing to add that now.

adding 'sold elsewhere' does not exempt you from ebay T&C's.

Knowing my luck it will go for next to nowt now. Ahh well. I'll sleep better knowing I played a fair game.

Yeah, I know what your saying is true lurch. But do 2 wrongs make a right? Unfortunately I'm not double hard like the Lurch himself. As mentioned above, sometimes I'm too soft for my own good.
