For as long as I can remember many countries not a part of Europe have taken part. Russia, Israel to name a couple. The criteria is that the country wishing to participate must be a member of the European Broadcasting Union, which Australia is a member of.

Yes! I'm going through a homesick spell atm so would have loved to watch it. But i'm stuck in a car on the way home from Kent.
