On the battery hen jobs, we use electric fences, to stop the birds pecking the eggs, and they run at about 1000v but only has tiny amount of mA, so no roast chicken

That's a crappy electric fence. Mine puts out 5500 - 6000V depending on how wet the earth is

mine 20000 to 30000 and i can ajust the voltage and mA accordinly :^O]
