This morning I was testing an extension that I'd wired (prior to energising) and found a N-E insulation fault on the upstairs lighting circuit..

after a little bit of further investigation I found that the fault was in a cable that linked 2 wall lights (6' apart) so with the homeowners permission I start to make a channel between the 2 lights to rewire that cable and what do I find....

I'd drilled through my own blinking cable :red card ,, I shouldnt have mind, because my cables came straight down the wall and the screws that I'd put in to fix the fitting were below where the cables exited the wall.... the blinking builder hadn't pulled all the slack through the board when he'd dot and dabbed the wall and he'd put a load of adhesive around the cables so I wouldn't have been able to pull any slack anyhow:red card

so,, about an hour and a hal chasing and fixing a fault that shouldn't have been there any how

the only bright side is that the builder now has a 6' long, 1/2 inch wide chase to make good ROTFWL

wall lights are the worst for this, with the brackets being so small and close to the cables, I cringe when drilling them.

Extended a ring last month, dropped the cable down along the side of a supporting joist for the floor, told my mate to lift the cables as he fired nails into fix the joist in place, a week later tested them had a Neutral CPC fault, all was plastered and decorated, had to chase it out and drop another cable down behind the skirting between the wall and floor boards luckily.

bulders/plasters drive me mad when they do this. Had one couple weeks ago had core drilled through for a fan and left cable, obvious where its meant to be. came back and cable nowhere, even when i knocked out searching for it couldnt find it- was still there in the attic! ended up rewiring it. Another once left a coil of cable to go to a socket in a stud wall in the top partion, 3 noggins away from where i'd cut into the wall for box. 6 holes to make good.

why do they do it?

are they punishing me?

had not only a plasterer fill in a light switch last week, but the decorators had wallpapered over it too.!!! luckily tapping gave out a hollow sound,,,,,

why do they do it?
because they don't care. I don't do site work for this reason, and only work with certain builders / tardesmen - the ones I can trust to look after the cables, not do a merry jig on them in their boots, and generally take care of where the nails go. There is also a certain amount of doing our work to try and prevent the idiots causing trouble....
