fluke tester

hi

i was giving a friend a run down on using his big new fluke tester tonight.

it has a big manual but i muddled my way through it from memory...

i managed to do

zeroing leads

continuity measurements

Ze

PFC

IR

when it came to rcd testing time, i put it on "rcd time" installed the three leads putting green on the earth bar, blue on the neutral bar and......as i put the red on the rcd protected breaker it gave a little flash popped the rcd and internal fuse

when i then checked the book it appears i did everything right.

has anyone any ideas?Applaud Smiley

typical bloke thing, do it first then look at the book to see why its not working lol.

has it got auto test on it? do you not have a plug adaptor?

i dunno, but it is the sexy curvy one with the F1-F4 buttons down the side....

i dont like them either, comes with an 80 page manual, the megger you just use:O

There`s a few with the "F1-F4" buttons - all 1650 series though.

I`ve never come across this - sounds like a fault with the machine; as that shouldn`t happen on ANY ranges.......

On the contrary Paul; it should be the LAST connection made.

Although there "shouldn`t" be any form of continuity between the probes, except under test conditions; if there was then the other probes could have live potential on them, with respect to earth.

As an aside, it couldn`t alter the result......

I dont believe so but.....

Anyhow he got a couple of fuses today and it is working fine:|

He needs to have it checked, Alan.

Even if you`d "missed" RCD time; one side is RCD ramp (same connections), and other side is Zs.

Unless you try to test live on low resistance range........

Cos it won`t LET you test ins. with voltage present.

And the only other settings available are voltage test (won`t blow fuse), and phase rotation (1653 only) - (won`t blow fuse).

I wouldn`t be trying to use it - something isn`t right.........

The guy at the shop went through the whole road test again and found nothing wrong. He just shrugged and told my buddy to crack on.....

Doctor al this made me smile and chuckle as a friend of mine asked me the same favour so i had a go and eventually found my way around the fluke job done. Then he said i wish that part p doctor would have used a fluke in his book ! Which he says has helped him alot by the way and also taught me a thing or to and i thought i knew it all only joking i still learn every day anyhow how about a book showing both the popular testers on the market fluke v megger or maybe pop a how to use a fluke with your book on the website ? Just an idea.

BTW, did your "friend", ensure that it was the correct Voltage rating fuse replaced?

it has been known for normal 250v fuses to be substituted and this gives a different reading.
