Hi

My sister has brought a new hosue that needs some work doing to bring it up to 17th edition. Our neighbour told us

it was cheaply rewired 11yrs ago. I'm City and guilds 2330 LV2 + LV3 qualified and currently doing 17th edition wiring regs,

1)the dedicated circuit for the garuage

what I would need to consider

  • 16A MCB for the 4mm swa to the garuage.
  • It's own mini consumer unit within the garuage
  • basic protection for the cable. How deep does this have to be buried ? I have a problem the main supply cable is on the right most wall of the property however there maybe an extension there. Can I channel it via the concrete floor in the existing kitchen extension?

2) Part building application

what they asked for

site plan - my sister has this

schematic - is this just like how I intend the wire everything up? i.e. I will show the cu then a 2.5mm cable for downstair ring protected by 32A mcb + RCD

Thanks for replying to my thread btw. I'm inexperienced and need so experience.

The garage is adjecent to the house with a 1/2 metre walkway between the house and garage. It also has a drive way from the front leading to the garage.

Trouble is the driveway maybe where an extension goes.

If I installed it via the ceiling joists I would have a big black cable running down the exterior wall facing the rear garden.

Is there any chance of running it within the wall cavity then drill a hole an inch above the floor of the exterior wall. then buried underground

to get to the garage. Trouble is my sister and brother in law are both quite picky. IT's understandable besides little Ethan it's their pride and joy.

Well the property is within Chorlton (Greater Manchester). I can take plenty of pics tomorrow.

problem is I want to do the job to qualify for NICEIC registration. I seem to have the knowledge but no practical. Just because you passed your theory test + harzard perception doesn't make you a competant driver.

Not by a long shot. The extension probably not going to be built any time soon. Can I bury it under the extension when we lay the foundation? The supply cable from the street is going to be be underneath the extension anyway!

amateur, PM me mate, TBH I dont think Id want the job even if it was offered to me, but I may be able to do a site visit and give you some pointers.

Any cable can be buried under anything with suitable duct...

and as most new build properties tend to have concrete floor or concrete foundation pad then a strategically placed duct

can save loads of hassle later!

I would just get a duct and a draw rope put in place then you can work around the builders later without your cable getting damaged.

.

I think if you need this type of basic help - it might be better top hire someone and ask to work alongside them- after all it is a big problem if you make a mistake because you forgot to ask about something on here. If your picky relative have to live with one of your mistakes - I think you will be hearing about it for a long time, tradition is to change your own cu (whether it needs it or not) for the assessment

You can put a 32A MCB on to a 4mm2 SWA, why not run the cables through your ceiling joists.

Where in the UK are you?

How long a cable is this advice going to hold true for - is there a need to consider volt drop at all, will it make difference if it goes through insulation.

If you are going to do it for an assessment I think these questions might come up - whats he gonna say Oh Andy off of the forum told me to do it like this :)

Post#3 states it is adjacent to the house with only a walkway separating them. I cannot see voltdrop being too much of an issue, any more than it is for cables going to the upstairs of the average property. i think the key question being asked is about the practicalities of burying the cable to the garage. As has been said, SWA cables can be directly buried. but added future flexibility will be gained with minimal extra cost by installing it in a duct.
