Garden Light Earthing

Hi,

I am wanting to install a stainless steel post light and 4 deck lights with 240v GU10 led lamps.

The cable is 3 core 1.5 mm armoured. The light fittings have no earth connection.

Can I use one of the cores from the armoured as earth, connected to the fittings by a ring crimp fastened by a nut and bolt to the body of the lamp?

The supply will be from a switched fused spur from the garage?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

if the light doesnt have an earth connection, then it may be double insulated and not need an earth. should say in the instructions

I am always one for making double sure with everything I do.

I will check the instructions when i get back. Would there be any harm in fitting the earth as described as well. Will it cause issues ?

unlikely to cause any problems, other than possible exporting of a TNCS earth to outside

#1  if its designed NOT to have an earth and you fit one you will be in some smelly stuff should anything go wrong.

#2  why make work that isnt there.?

The instructions state the fitting must be earthed when using GU10 lamps. There is only a 2 cable lamp holder and no earth tab on the fitting. What do you recommend? Can I do as originally posted or not?

Can you please explain more about exporting?

then it needs earthed. is there any bolt holes where it could attach? failing that, what you said in post 1 should work

Can you post pic's yet I would like to see the terminal connection block. If they say it should be earthed normally a earth connection point is provided.

Sorry forum wont let me post pics. In the box is the lamp with two cable glands. A GU10 and MR16 lamp holder with two tails on each. There are 3 single connector blocks which are similar to a ceramic/porcelain type. There are no bolts or earth tabs on the lamp that I can see. Do say made in China so that may explain things.

Any advice again would be great.

No there are two wires from the Gu10 lamp holder option. The same for the mr16 option and three seperate single terminal blocks to connect your supply cables.

Gents. Sincere apologies i have stripped one of the lights down and below the top is an earth cable secured to the fitting. Very grateful for all your help.

Feel like a clown but at least it will be right!!!
