My girlfriend's hamster started breathing fast a few weeks ago. At first we put it down to old age - he's roughly 2.5 years old, but she's done some reading up and apparently it could be a heart/lung problem, which may be cured with antibiotics. He breathes normally when he's asleep. He's eating and drinking as normal.

Is it worth taking him to a vet or is it just his age finally catching up with him? :C

Thanks.

Doesn't sound too good to be fair. I did know a colleague who treated a hamster for heart failure! An infection is a possibility. Simple fact - at 2 and a half unlikely to be around much longer.

IF you are worried go to the Vets. This is one of those issues that I can't advise much without seeing!

(Sorry for delay replying - was out last night at a conference!)

Thanks. We're (well, she is) a bit worried but then the age he is I just wonder if everything is that bit more difficult for him nowadays? Like I said he's fine when asleep it's just when he's awake, though he is eating & drinking as normal.

We'll talk it over and see what we'll do with the little scamp. Probably end up taking him to a vet, he gets more attention than I do. :coat

Thanks. Guinness
