Been on site today and took a bang to the head which if i hadnt been wearing my hardhat would have casued me some pretty catastrophic damage. As it is I just have strained neck muscles ( i have the neck muscles of a bison so i know it was a good knock) and a motherfigure of a headache....

Anyways, what i want to know is, are hard hats like bike helmets in as much as once theyve had a good bang they shud be replaced?

cheers

YEP replace the hat.

They should also be replaced after a certain number of years as the plastic goes brittle.

What did you hit, or was something dropped.

If you have a mother headache, you really ought to seek medical advice. Concussion?

no blood drawn, Im fine in all other ways ( my grammars always this bad lol) pretty sure the headache is due to the muscle strain, but Ill see how I am tomorrow

I shouldn't but I will :slap :slap :slap
lol.... ratfink :B ;)

They used to say never put stickers on or use certain marker pens as the solvents can affect the strength of the plastic. I dont know if that still stands today.
I thought this was the case, but if it is, I don't understand why I'm are often told by main contractors to put an induction sticker on my hard hat :C

This is true. The solvents in glues and pens can affect the material.

Yes you should replace the helmet. They protect your head by sacrificially absorbing the impact instead of transmitting it to your head. It's a bit like the crumple zone on your motor absorbing the impact before it gets to you. But on a smaller scale.

As you cannot know the impact energy yield and cannot know the damage done to the material, the safe thing to do is replace it.

I bet if you didn't have your hat on you wouldn't of banged your head, I know I hit my head so many times with my helmet on but never seem too when I "forget" to put it on

Being 6'4" I can almost guarantee that when wearing a hard hat I'll bump into something and rick my neck! But yes its still a no-no to marker pen names etc on them. Ditto spray painting them. I think that it's still acceptable to cover them in tin foil though!

I was born and bred in a little town called Bedworth, 'Beduff' to the natives, situated betwixt Coventry and Nuneaton. Midlander through and through and now that i live in Devon, i do get derided for it.

Even from my 3 yr old! I was reading her a story not too long ago and read the word grass, and pronounced it as it should be pronounced, as in rhyming with mass, and she stopped me by putting her hand on my arm and said "No Daddy, its 'grarse'" lol

You mean rhyming with arse !!!! No, it rhymes with ass.

AH Bedduth , we did the Barclays Bank refurb there many tears ago . At least you're not a Yam-Yam .

Thats where the daft consultant decided the main switch in the panelboard should be a 100A TP 100mA RCD . Returning there to check a fault , I'd forgotten about it TBH , because the thing I was checking had lost a neutral I put my tester across L - E , the whole bank tripped out, emergency lights on, alarm sounding, staff go into Bandit alert. They were not happy.

I'm 6'4" aswell and while wearing a hard hat adds a few more inches so like you normally bump into something but nothing bad.....so far.
