My 3 month old ragdoll kitten Kaydi hasnt eaten since thursday - i took him to the vet yesterday morning who gave him an antibiotic injection and tablets but he still wont eat. He isnt acting ill and is still playing and running about (altho slower) but i am worried sick as i know he must eat. He is drinking water, hasnt got diarrhoea or any other symptoms. The vet said its probably a bug and wasnt concerned as Kaydi is so bright. I tried ringing the vet this morning for advice but they are closed. I wanted to ask if i should try forcefeeding Kaydi and how long a kitten can go without food. Please can anyone help?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

This is one of those questions really hard to answer over the internet! Cats are funny creatures that little changes can upset them and put them off their food. There are a lot of health problems that can cause these problems, some not serious, some very serious.

If the kitten is not eating anything by Monday you must go back to the vets and they will likely do some blood tests (obviously depends what they find when they examine him). All vets are obliged to provide out of hours care and if you ring their number they should direct you to the emergency out of hours service if you are worried today.

There is no harm tempting him to eat. Tuna, pilchards, chicken etc often good - a 15 second blast in the microwave makes them smell stronger and may be more palatable. Don't 'force feed' the kitten, just encourage it. A little milk shouldn't do much harm, but some kittens get diarrhoea as they have developed a lactose intolerance.

KME - teething would be unlikely to stop them eating. I have removed all the rotten teeth in a cat and they have gone home that evening and crunched biscuits!
