Hi I have minimal knowledge of electricity supplies and am need of help. We have our electricity supply from our house to our garage which is located only about 5 metres from our house. Suddenly the electricity in the garage has stopped working, but the main supply in the house is working fine. I have absolutely no idea why the garage electricity has stopped working. We really need the electricity back in the garage. Can anyone help? Thanks in adavance.

Welcome to the forum, how old is the property? Unless you have had some quite major overload blowing a fuse it is more likely an RCD has tripped somewhere, as most garage sockets would require RCD protection for current wiring regulations. There may be something which looks like a small fuse box in the garage, such as http://www.screwfix.com/p/mk-metal-garage-kit/14107. Or a standalone RCD bit like this http://www.screwfix.com/p/mk-sentry-2-module-63a-30ma-rcd/86634 in a small enclosure, or a thing called an RCBO http://www.screwfix.com/p/mk-sentry-20a-30ma-sp-type-b-curve-rcbo/73771 which could be fitted at your main house fuse box. Depending upon the make some of these switches stop at a half-way position when they trip off so it may not immediately look as though the device is off.

My money would be on a 13 amp fuse blowing when you say you really need the power back on is there a lot of stuff in garage?

Firstly sorry for the late replies. I am very busy and work a long way from home. Thanks to all for the quick replies

The house electricity is working fine. How can we check the fuses/circuit breakers in the house? In our house we have a traditional fuse box with two fuses which supplies the main electricity. In the garage there is a separate traditional fuse box with four fuses. My brother in law said that one of the fuses in the house fuse box had blown and the fuse wire in it just needed replacing in it to restore the electricity supply back to the garage. He replaced the fuse wire and I connected the fuse back to the socket of the box  but didn't realise that I had to turn switch off before connecting the fuse and shortly afterwards I heard a loud crack sound. He said that now something else now had blown. He replaced the wire again on the fuse himself and it is not working. Could I have damaged the electricty supply from the house to the garage?

We have a light supply and two freezers in the garage which are connected to the sockets which is why we desperately need the electricity back, with no electricity in the garage we are having to run an extension cable to connect the freezers to the house electricity supply. The cable is running through the garden and through the cat flap into the house. I am worried about this.

I'm not sure how old the property is. I think the house was built in the 1940's but that is a guess. What is an RCD and RCBO?

Thanks for the help.

yes,

it deffos sounds as though the cable supplying the garage is suspect,

if it really is that essential it may be a lot cheaper to employ an electrician to find the fault,

it shouldnt take long to actually identify the problem, and therefore shouldnt cost too much,

obviously depending on where the fault lies, the repair could be a variable amount.

where abouts in the country are you located?
