Hello Murrellson, I would never recommend anyone buys anything as important as an electrical tester, that you will be using to verify the safety of your work, from a site that may just be someones bedroom. Make sure whoever you purchase from, that you have a full UK postal address and land line phone number and that they can provide backup support should anything fail during warranty period. Some cheap offers are not as cheap as they appear when you compare the full support package.

Better still, PM megger mark with the spec and budget you are trying for and I am sure he will find the best deal he can for you.

Keep in mind that test meters do occasionally fail or get damaged due to accidental mishandling, it is a hazard of the trade carrying a few hundred pounds worth of tester in your van and around site. So double check you can get back-up support.

the fluke 1651 has not been callibrated,
Also, whatever make or model of tester you do finally purchase, I would think it sensible to make sure you have a valid calibration certificate with it. Keep us updated how you get on, I am sure others will comment later once back from work.

Thank you for the excellent advice Doc H, you have pointed out some good things that I would not of thought about. In all the excitement of having my first tester I just didnt think about things like back up support. Obviously callibration is an important thing so if it doesnt have one I will get it callibrated asap.

I have just bought the FLUKE 1651 for

Also worth adding that no mater what make or model of tester or where you originally purchased it from, ISSWWW Calibration do provide full calibration and repair service for many makes of tester (add them to your favourits bar). So if your e-bay seller is just a "virtual shop, box seller" with no support then you have another real bricks and mortar service center you can use.

Hi Murrellson- I never suggest anyone buy a tester from ebay, for the reasons the good Doc says but also because there is a lot of stolen stock on there.

I don't imagine you would like to support someone who may well have nicked a fellow professionals kit!

Having said that, when you receive your tester give me a PM and i will see about putting a calibration cert on it for you.

All the best luck with it anyway.

my opinion, not that its maybe worth much,

that meter was neither cheap, nor a bargain,

if money is that tight brand new (although perhaps 'lesser' ) meters can be had for not a lot more money,

and by the time calibration is factored in then we are looking 300+ for the e.bay meter with an unknown history and (probably) no warranty so to speak of,

I do hope it is a brand spanker for that sort of cash.
