In the office again.
My lappie has been running a bit warm recently- the fan needs a clean. methinks.

So I shut it down earlier (1st time in MONTHS) - now the ruddy thing won`t start.........

It goes through bios, and to the " microsoft corp" screen, with the travelling green bars.............and stays there (I left it 15 mins before a hard shutdown & restart).

Now its gone into "startup repair mode" ( 6th time of starting up), and has been "attempting repairs" for about 10 mins. I managed to run chkdsk from DOS, and, in the midst of checking indexes, stuck at a particular location for 20 mins :(

What`s its problem, and what can I do to resolve it? I`m on mrs` machine, and really need my lappie working again. PLEASE?????

If you can start in safe mode, grab all your documents and save to an external hd, before you do any major fixes. I lost all my data being a bull in a china shop.

Ah ....Right .........I'll have to get back to you on that one ..........ran chckcdt disc from DOS Eh! ...........Hmmmmm!

I could show you how to copy & Paste a vid from Youtube ????

He can't tell you , under the ECC PC laws it would be ageism . And FFS don't ask him the colour !!!! I 'm working on a solution but it may be some time . I have my work cut out helping Apache and Admin with their problems

run a live copy of ubuntu from CD,

DONT (Manator!) install it, just try it.

then use it to access all your data from your HDD and back it up to an external disk,

then re-install windoze,

or upgrade to Ubuntu. :D

told you, canoey and me are gonna get everyone in the whole wide world out of Bills grasp. :)

I am actually getting use to ubuntu now and so far prefer it to windows, god knows what I will be like when I learn all its features, I remember years ago running redhat, but back then I was a bit of a computer programmer (cobol if anyone remembers that dinosaur).

Manator,

I really couldnt use anything else now,

was at my mates the other day and he has a really fancy PC running win7 ultimate and I just got fed up after about 20mins,

it really doesnt compare.

BTW, for your problem we need you to run easycert from the terminal so we can get what error is showing up, spoke to a guy who reckons this is a solvable file issue. :)

KME,

I have a bootable Ubuntu live Cd here & a usb hdd big enough (750Gb) to store your data on just in case.

BRT, I did NOT touch it! ;)

Seems to have been a spate of computer problems recently my tower machine packed in last night, into a boot loop, back now.

Ok - its between 1 and 2 yrs old. I don`t get as far as "safe mode"; even if I hijack bios on startup; it tells me windoze is "loading files" for system recovery; then freezes!

Its running now - and I know why I don`t shut it down - it recovers fine from hibernation, but can take a number of goes to bring it up from cold :(

I don`t have any other runnable opsys in any format - Snakey - I could be tempted to give the Ubuntu a try............

I`ll leave it on now; until I pull it apart later to clean the fan off.............

Thanks for all the ideas guys, especially Deke.....Your input was impressive, most informative (and utterly useless :slap )

I'll let you have a copy next week, you just boot off the dvd and run it as a trial not install it!

You can see it runing on my laptop 1st if you want?

Vista................OMG

That is one useless bloated OS if there ever is one... I had it pre-installed on my laptop, got fed up with it and stuck Unbutu on it.. that then upgraded and I had a WiFi issue so I put XP on it.. runs fine(ish) now, but I really do wish I was back on a Linux OS

try ubuntu 10.04

try it, dont install it, and any issues come back for some help,

most issues are with HW not releasing base code, but most can be overcome.

Nah mate...

staying in Birmingham over weekend and going to Gadget show tomorrow....

gonna try and get myself some shiney new bit of gadge........... iPad2 or ASUS eee Pad Transformer are top list at the moment (WiFi only as I can tether through my phone)
