:| Hi all (presume mostly lads ?) the name is Stuart and I work in Manchester as a spark in the TV industry, I was on production lighting making programs for 26yrs and now working as an electrical wireman mainly fixing faulty eqiupment inside the building, interests include being a radio ham, DIY,caravanning, fishing (when I find the time) :Y

Indeed, Welcome to the forum. Good to have you onboard. :D

Hi Sparky2, welcome to the forum.

Mostly male members altho there are nearly 100 female members-not all are sparks (i'm not)

Hello Stuart, welcome to the forum. that sounds like an interesting electrical background.

Doc H.

Hi Doc, Yes I was in contracting for a small firm for about 10 yrs doing allsorts then moved into TV mainly doing lighting and power for studios and temp locations, passed the 14th edition ( orange ) many years ago ( 30+ ) and just updated to the 17th, now mainly looking after studio cables electrically and video and sound cable repairs, there has just been a BS brought out for the TV industry BS7909 but haven't managed to find time to read it yet, I have missed out a massive change in contracting since being in the TV game ( have they stopped using capping and casing and lead covered ? ) good job VIR is still in use, must clean the rust off my 3/4 dies.Blushing cheers - Stuart.

Is the 7909 much different from the draft? managed to get a copy of that, but no way am i going to pay what they want for 7909. daylight robbery comes to mind

lead covering is pretty much gone, but capping its still in use every so often. depending on job, i normally clip direct and plasterer boards over

Hi Andy, Don't know what the changes are/were between draft and final publication, must have a read of it and see if there are any major changes to working practice, I think there is feedback via our H&S dept back to the global TV regulators to see if it works in practice. cheers - Stuart. :D

i got a copy of the draft just to be nosy - do some temp power stuff myself, but nothing big (probably very small by your standards!).

What do they think of using 7909 & 7671 - since 7909 is all about temporary power etc, was there a point of adding a section in 7671? seems like a waste of time

Hi Andy, yes 7671 is used in conjuction with 7909 and makes sure that only sparks are in charge of the installation, we tend to have a battle in TV to make sure that sparks are on the jobs as companys try to use non skilled labour which are cheaper !, but this is the first time that specific TV/film regulations have come out ( and not before time ) as some of the electrical jobs in the past have stemmed from the old DC days of 110v used in the film studios. cheers - Stuart.
