Hello all,

Did an extension recently which was going to be used as a kitchen. Five double sockets along one wall. The extension had a pitched roof with the top of the "point" in the middle of the room with the wall with the sockets on it at 90 degrees to the angles of the roof. This would have made it very difficult to run the cables up and down as I would normally do so I ran them horizontally between the sockets then ran the return for the ring along below the back boxes as no route back continuing round the room. The walls were breeze block with battons fitted and platerboard screwed onto the battons so this method also makes life much easier to add/modify the circuit later. So my questions is I am hoping to use this as one of my jobs for my re-assesment for ELECSA but am a bit concerned about horizontal cabling being frowned upon. Everything is in safe zones etc. What do you guys think?

Perfectly acceptable and appropriate installation method!

and if anyone else tells you otherwise tell them to go and insulation resistance test their left ear lobe at 1000v!! X(

{RSPCA banned slapping with wet haddocks! :_| }

All installation work is based on basic principals of.. (in no particular order)..

Safety, practicality, compliance with regs, costs acceptable to the client. etc..

IF anyone questions the regs...

Tell then to read reg 522.6.6 bullet point (v) page 100 of big red

or page 60 of OSG!

In some cases doing vertical runs can put a big increase on your cable cost..

AND your circuits lengths.. R1+R2, ZS, Volt drop et-al!

Stand your ground and quote em some regs back they you are compiling with.

Jobs a Goodun IMHO! ;)

I'm a fan of Horizontal runs around the kitchen. It takes away the possibility of the kitchen fitters doing the usual when hanging wall units. (Can be difficult to stay in safe zones though if there is a window present)
