Needing some help, had call from customer who said water heater isnt heating water.

Went round, customer says that water board were working further down road and they were told to turn off heater and water, which they did. After that the heater didnt work.

So far i found that the water wasnt turned back on, which i have now done. They have had a plumber round ( who didnt see that water was off lol) who said it is an electricians problem.

The orange light is on for the timer switch, which i set to correct time while i was there. When i turn the boost dial, the light for boost comes on then turns off instantly, which also dims the timer switch light. No way to get boost to stay lit.I didnt test anything as i was running late for taxi duties for family, going to go back and try testing/restting thermostat on boost element.

Anyone have some pointers, i have interwebs searched but no joy so far, so thought i would ask while i search some more.

well you need to check continuity of the heater element and check if any voltage gets to it when turned on.

What I don't understand is why the boos light goes straight off. Since it's a mechanical timer on those, there's no fancy overload devices, just a mechanical time switch, so the switch must be faulty.

There's usually no need to use the boost, unless someone has had a bath and used all the hot water, it should just heat a full tank over night.

If the lights are dimming when you turn the heater on then there's something wrong, especially as they are neon lights, to the voltage must be dropping seriously, so check for loose connections, and measure the voltage into and out of the unit to see if it's really dropping.

Check the thermostat and see if it has an overlaod thermostat that may have tripped and need resetting.

Ok, ill check those things as soon as i can get back there. You added couple of things to what i thought i should test.

Thanks mate.
