Might seem a daft question - what is the recognised standard way of doing this and what tools do you use?

Thanks

Thanks mate - Cool I use somthing similar at the mo - I thought for some unknown reason sparks preferred to used a knife?!?!?

Whats wrong with a good old fashioned pair of sides???

Honestly the youth of today .....blah blah rhubarb rhubarb etc....

BTW cheers for that link Matty, I tried to PM you a thanks last night but your box is full mate :)

There's nothing wrong with asking what each spark's preferred method of stripping a t&e, steps.

The way you lot are carrying on there will be no posts on the forum!!!

I understand what you mean, Specs.

There are two choices there:

  • Link to them (like you have)
  • Don't reply
Don't forget our motto - a place where you can ask anything without the fear of being ridiculed. * (that is what other forums are for) ;)

:)

Also, don't forgetthat if you scroll to the bottom each thread, there are similar threads there too. (but, as you say - when you enter the title of your thread - you are greeted with a list of any possible similar threads, so it would save you posting another one the same - which is indeed, the very reason that I added that bit to the forum). :D

* Of course, if you are a qualified electrician, I wouldn't expect to see a question of which a student electrician would ask.

Sorry if I offended pasting duplicate threads - in future I will use the search option more! ;)

I must say since I have the CK strips Matty mentioned I use them for most T&E now. It depends how much you need to strip off. More than 6 inches, then its another method (or multiple uses of the strippers). I mostly pull the CPC with the side snips but depending on access do also use the knife method. Was told that pulling cpc was frowned upon now as it can reduce the CSA of the cable as its stretched. Bet the knife method raises eyebrows with H&S too.

I know what you mean Ian about the ck's. If it's over 3" then multiple goes are needed. In fact some of the cable lately needed to be done in 1.5" to 2" lengths as the outer insulation has stuck to the conductors inside lacking the talcum powder lol

I always use my side cutters, by snipping the end then pulling the CPC through. I then strip the insulation off using the same cutters. Somedays I can go through the entire day only getting my cutters and a terminal screwdriver out of my tool box!

Always try to report inferior cable to your supplier, I can not remember the full details but I do know there was some discussions about this, the answer was to return the cable as being unsuitable to strip, must admit when I have found this problem I have already done the first fix so its too late. :(
