My background is from the, working class, Birmingham back streets. Parents were not well off so money was tight.

No TV until I was about 10 yrs old , how we longed for one till my Dad raised the deposit for a new B+W TV set . What has made me think is that I now have three working, colour TV sets that need to go to the council tip . We have a flat screen jobbie and no one would be interested in the others . They all work but technology moves on .

One is a small portable.

One is a 20" Hitachi (I think there is a scart)

One is the very deep Toshiba 30" with surround . About three years old.

All working .

deke how much would you want for the prtable, i only want it for cctv pictures to show in the bedroom on the unit under my main tv just so i can see whats going on outside etc ;)

I agree, one of the tenants in one of our social housing project was saying to the foreman last week her TV had gone on the blink, an old 24" ish CRT that was sitting there, he said his friend had just got a new TV and she could have the old one.

turned up next day with a 34"ish CRT and she looked totally gobsmacked,

' OH, sorry, I thought it was a plasma, I dont want that.! '

FFS, it was a free TV, some people......

I had to dump a perfectly good 30" CRT a few months back, kept it for almost a year and absolutely no-one wanted it, even the wifes nephew(10yr old) said he would rather have NO TV in his room, then his mother(single parent, doesnt work) went out and bought him a 20" LCD.

how the F can they afford it is my question, and why do they expect it is the other?

past lot of years of government has made it worth your while to be a scrounger and a dole mole,

NO OFFENCE to those that cant get a job, but all the offence in the world is meant to those that expect to earn big money for nothing, and wont take any job they get offered.

caught a bit of a programme on tv the other night with some bloke with NO skills expecting to get at least

Good points. Trouble is the minimum wage and the reluctance of a lot of people to work as 'its not worth it' ie little or no better of than benefits. If thats the case then benefits are too much. Instead of a 'safety net' for the vulnerable its become a way of life paid for by the good old taxpayer. My son recently got married and was very grateful for my old (12 years but perfect nick) Panasonic with nicam etc - yes its CRT the only thing wrong with CRTs is size and weight they actually have a better picture than LCD/Plasmas.

I always wonder why people living off benefits all have the latest TV, SKY, DVR, X Box. PS3 latest phone with

there are two types of poor:

no money to eat poor

plasma tv poor

We live in a bubble and we are all guilty of it!

you know your poor if your tv is massive and you living room is small.

they sould scrap benerfits for anyone able to work unless they put in community service hours

My daily work schedule is up at 5.AM out to work half hour later, and finish at 8PM 9PM or 10 pm.

I have so much work on at the moment that all my time is taken by work, my kitchen is falling to pieces, the dogs have chewed all my leather chesterfield settee, my house needs rewiring, I have only half a ceiling in my lobby, my van needs taxing its my brothers wedding tomorrow and I am going to miss it because of work commitments.

I wish I could afford the simple things in life like leisure time or quality time with my family.

Sometimes we should all stop and think like that.

Greeny I think you actually need to step back and follow up on your last sentence.

"What is this life ,if so full of care ,

That we have no time to stand and stare."

Or as Joni Mitchel said " You don't know what you've got till its gone"

Or, do we live to work or work to live ?

Or ,from one of my early posts, my old gaffer used to moan because one of the sparks would never work on Saturdays. He watched his son play footy in the mornings and then to watch Birmingham City in the afternoon .

Who had it right ??? HHHhmmmmm!!

So very true.

I must admit I have neglected my family for years working away, my wife has taken most of the strain, I tried to work local hoping it gave me more time at home, but local work is dry and not well paid, so I have opted to working away again. To be honest I have been working most weekends with a fellow member of this forum, he is going through his training and I was asked by his sister in law if I would give him some on the tools experience. He works every week in his normal job, and comes with me at weekends for free, one of the best moves I ever made, he can now be left to do any job and do it well. I have family commitments but he has far greater commitments than me, and yet he comes with me every weekend, now thats my inspiration. (he seldom looks at my posts so I can talk about him).

I am a workaholic but its how I have been brought up, I would rather work than be idle, a week at home and I just sleep all day.

Last year I lost
