Theres always the non micrometer/vernier method . If you can't tell by eye (some sizes are ambiguous ) try a crimp lug on it .

Nothing wrong with a dial vernier. I have a Kern

which I used to calibrate a crankshaft during an

engine rebuild. I dropped the crank to a re-grind

outfit, waiting to hear him tell me it was undersize

by a big margin. He confirmed with his outside mike

all the readings I had taken.

Result; I gave him the regrind job.

P.S. thought conductor sizes were checked with a

Vee-notch gauge?

Slide rule Manator? The addition of logarithms (logs).

Could be a pile-up.
