Ah,

Now you are getting toward my point, come on Andy, you know my track by now. ;)

Yes they ALL have ground level controls.

However, you are working up in the air and suffer severe injury, such that you are incapacitated.

Now what happens?

OK then who here has done the GOTCHA training for recovering a person who is suspended from a lanyard after a fall? I have! Apparrently if you fall in a harness, you could die after 20 mins from 'suspension' trauma, which rersults from circulation being stopped etc. Also seen some horrific pics of what happens if your harness isnt correctly adjusted. Not nice. makes you think it might be better taking your chances with the concrete floor!

I've seen the pics but not done the training!

Suspension trauma is very unpleasant and definitely can cause serious injury and easily be fatal!

This is a MAJOR reason for good rescue plans for persons suspended from fall arrest harnesses.

When I was an apprentice we had O/H gantry cranes, and they decided that the operators needed escape means (mid 80's) they installed a harness and an inertial reel device that lowered the operator to ground level in a controlled manner, however, there was obviously a fixed distance to ground thus the length of "lanyard" etc. could be defined prior to use.

Funny thing I saw 2 new Morris cranes on the back of lorries today coming West down the M4, about J41 (ish) when I was on the way back from Cardiff talking to Admin about his planer / thicknesser!

Only 12t, but quite wide!

There were 4 Morris cranes in the potrooms. 30 ton SWL with 2 bogeys with 15T on each. These were used for filling the hoppers on each cell with alumina 316 in all. There was also 8 ECL cranes which were used for tapping the molten metal into the 13T Cruce and for changing anodes. All the cranes were updated in recent years

It's always the way Revit's a shame the place had to close really, one of the biggest employers on the island IIRC... wasn't it due to their electricity rates not being subsidised any more??
One of the biggest apart from Wylfa power station. The misconception was that we had subsidised power. We had a contract that finished in Sept 09 and the rate was

I think a deviation from a solved thread is always welcome, especially when little tit bits of information are always welcome.

Spent 12 years there. Learned my trade then went back 17 years later. My father worked there and 2 of my brothers. Lots of people I know worked there. Thats why it was such a shocker when the final decison was to close. There is very little in the way of UK Aluminium smelting now its all south america, china, australia and middle east. It makes you wonder what will the UK be a producer of? potatoes? We have lost our motor industry, major manufacturers are few and far between.

Rev,One lanyard of each type?

This is a difficult one as you could fall from the boom whilst traversing, however, a boom is not designed as a fall arrest device, and your fall could tip it over!

Hard hat is to stop you from bumping your head on the crane and knocking yourself out thus being stranded in the basket! ;)

Who uses these regularly by the way?
I use cherry pickers and boom lifts fairly regularly, maybe two or three times a month, scissor lifts not so often unless doing factory work.

3A Mobile Vertical

3b Mobile Boom

I believe you don't need IPAF for a static? Or at least that is what we've been told on the job we are on at moment.

Got a feeling i may have jumped into this thread after the ship has sailed?

oh well

But surely 3A,B supercede it?

Static have only UP and DOWN functions and can only be moved when platform is fully lowered. correct?

No Bane they do not as a static has peculiarities that you do not see with 3A & B.

Noz,

Do you want to buy a life saving (your life saving!) device on price?

you would think so, but it doesnt

I've found these harnesses...Full Body Harness | Fall Arrest Harness | Fall Restraint Harness

I was thinking of the second one down with a lanyard.... what do you think??
i would go with something more comfortable

my fall arrest/restraint harness if a rope access harness, so its a lot more comfortable, but i usually use my climbing harness

as for lanyard, i dont have a 'proper' lanyard. i usually use some rope & a shunt
