They just appear when I log in .................

Log in to what page?  (I never log out so it is always there when I go to it from a bookmark)

I just view the forum using "view new content" to see what has been posted since my last visit.

I do. Tbh it's generally as far as I can tell from people I've never seen before or who've ever posted. I always think changing your profile picture willy nilly is just attention seeking. Or could it be spam as in click on their profile and get duped into clicking on a dubious link. Time wasters.

Thing is you get used to them  ..... Ah I see a Lancaster Bomber ,  must be Murdo .....  guy standing by the village of Twat ...must be ProDave ......   pair of high heels  ...  erm  ..well... least said about that the better. 

Mine of course  shows  two members of our workforce  with one of our vast fleet of vehicles in the background.
