Afternoon all. Got called to a job just before chrismas. Lighting circuit feed had become damaged, so I'm calling back tomorrow to replace it. Anyway had a quick look in the CU (wired approx 2001) and noticed that the cable feeding it looked like a single core SWA with half the armouring sleeved and used as the neutral and the other half sleeved and used as the earth. The cable comes from manweb's DP isolator outside, about 10m away and into the mainswitch. There is no switchfuse. Is it ok to use this type of cable? ?:|

you mean split con? nothing wrong with it

Yes . split concentric but there should be a sw/fuse for that length of sub main unless the the reg. has changed. Manweb's service fuse is protecting it though , so its not a big deal IMO.

Deke

It's not a reg, the DNO usually state a maximum tail length. Generally this is 2 or 3m.

I love split concentric, much easier to work with than SWA. Just doesn;t seem to be that common other than for main supply cables from the DNO.

id rather use split con too, but since 17th, its treated like T&E WRT RCD's, so a little impractical at times. much easier to terminate than SWA!

DNO supplies are generally straight con, so you cant 'borrow' any from them either

This cable should not be used to supply a consumer unit.

The cable feeding the consumer unit is part of the customers installation which can not form part of a TN-C system!

split con can and is used for submains & final circuits.

straight con cant be used for this though

Is this right guys or what? J

not fully. depends if its straight or split. since you said some are used as earth & some as neutral, id guess its split. on split, some of the outer conductors are insulated blue for neutral, earth is uninsulted (as per pic in post 2). striaght con has all uninsulated conductors as earth/neutral (TNC/PME)

professionals post still isn;t fully accurate as you could use straight con for feeding a CU, you'd just have to run a seperate earth as well.

There is no mention of a seperate earth in the original post. The original poster needs to be more specific in what he is dealing with in order that specific advice can be given...........
