As said my BIL has no experience of dogs and his partner has had dogs but not an Akita I just hope they don't live to regret it.

Isn't it a simple and inescapable FACT that all dogs CAN be vicious and "turn" BUT some of those breeds are better "equipped" by their historical breeding for fighting / doing damage. They don't generally use Spaniels or Poodles for pit fighting do they? Or Pits for rounding sheep? I guess what I'm trying to say is I'd rather get bitten by a Lab than an Akita (ideally neither). A Staff or Pit Bull if it goes for a child is simply better equipped to do MORE damage by DESIGN, greater jaw pressure, build, tenacity etc. Not the dog's fault but I would be more wary of certain types than others.

As an aside, of all the dog's in my immediate family my Dalmation/Golden Retriever cross was the only one to have bitten anyone (my missus when she thought she'd break up a scrap between my dog and her brothers Doberman). The Doberman never bit anyone, ditto his current Bloodhound/Rottie cross.
