Was it the socket or the plug at fault?

You never can tell sometimes, although often the fuseholder in the molded plug is a common cause of this problem, with age.

it mostly happens with a moulded plug, so i would guess the plug is at fault most of the time. one problem being though, since its moulded, it cant be visually inspected for loose connections, unlike a normal plug which can be checked after something like this

Yep, had a few of these in my time, some you couldn't even sperate!
