I noticed a light fitting the other day  and remembered they were quality fittings ,  always specified on jobs ... I thought they had the best , most evocative , romantic brand name in the business.

Merchant Adventurers.

Then they changed it to MA I think it was and I'm sure it became a bit shoddier.

Then they changed it to Marlin .

Then they disappeared.

Fitzgerald used to be in Abbots Rd, St. Helens .....I did a PIR on their warehouse!

i know the U.K. sales manager, Tim Fitzgerald and His dad

i used to use Fitz for everything and two of my jobs won them a design award

they had trouble with the bank about 8 years ago, had to wrap and start again

a very nice company to work to work with and excellent customer service

very first job they did for me there was an issue with the Helvar ballasts........sales manager and his Father came to site one weekend and swapped the lot!

thats why I carried on using them for over 30 years

just saying

I think Marlin is still around it's one of those companies that was bought up by Concord

I'm fairly sure its a Fitzgerald that is up near haydock island as well.

@phil d   ?
They've moved to Sutton now, other side of town, I used to use a load of their gear years ago, it was cheaper than a lot of the other stuff, but still decent, I used some fairly recently and it had really gone downhill.

I remember one job we were on and we fitted hundreds of a new fitting that had just come out at the time, the Thorn "pop" pack, they were brilliant, you attached a back plate to your ceiling or conduit boxes, it had a connector block in it, the fitting then attached to this with 2 clips, it was a bit like an ordinary fitting turned around. Instead of the fitting going up, then attaching the cover, the "cover" was on the back, and that went up first. We thought these were great, especially when you were fitting 30 or 40 a day, no trying to hold a 6' twin fitting with one hand and screw it to the ceiling with the other.

It was during this job that I had a bit of brain fade, it was quite funny but the boss wasn't impressed.

There was a very high room that had about 30 of these fittings in, the back plates had been fitted, all that was needed was to clip the fittings on and fit the lamps. As I had been on a particularly difficult job for the last week, it was given to me as a way of having a rest, I had a scissor lift with a load of fittings and tubes in and started at one end of the room. attach the fitting, remove tubes from cardboard sleeves, throw sleeves over the side and fit the tubes.

I'd fitted about 10, then something went wrong, I attached the fitting, unpacked the tubes, threw them over the side! and attempted to install the cardboard sleeves, I then threw the sleeves over the side and repeated the process, I must have bust about half a dozen tubes before I realised my mistake.

Sort of company I like .

are Courtney Pope still on the scene?
That raises a bad memory  Poni.

As an apprentice about 19 or 20..  One of the bosses tells me to get the van out,  go round to Dartmouth Street  & collect a load of light fittings from Courtney Pope.

"Look for the Flatted Factory    They're  there"

So I'm 19 right !  I'm not paying attention ....I drive to Dartmouth Street...I'm looking for a Flattened Factory , as in , flattened by Hitler or something ..and next door will be Courtney Pope .   The concept of a "Flatted Factory"  meant sod all to me .

Wrong!!!

After much searching I return with no fittings  to a severe dressing down and the calling of names ..some I was not aware existed.... and then dispatched once again , this time with a better idea of the place to look for .

A case of not listening I think , but never forgotten as I still pass the damn place .
