I was going to say something about that but I was afraid that steptoe was the bright spark. So said nothing lol.

I did a job the other week, an electrician had been in and fitted a brand new BG board only a couple of weeks previous, and then in the intervening days some other clown had been to fit a vehicle charging point and shoved a Chint MCB on the end of the row. The job was 5 mins from 3 suppliers that all carried BG MCB's. Sometimes I mix and match but if making a very small effort means they match then I'll do that. I did a job the other day, which TBF I had done originally and then added bits to over the years so there was a Square D Main switch, a Hager HRC and a Crabtree MCB in a 4 mod enclosure, swapped it all for Hager just because.  Obviously no courgettes given by some people though as long it'll just jam in somewhere.
Exactly and that's my point, if you can get the correct breaker easily enough then nip out and get one, if it means a round trip of 3 hours or a 2 week wait then fit something else, so long as it fits in safely. I went to a job in December, the guy had had a new board fitted and the bloke who fitted it had jammed 2 oddball breakers in, why!

You look at a planned job, and a board change is normally planned and you say, "I need, 4x32A,1x16A, 1x20A,and 3x6A and you go and buy them with the board and you buy them to suit, the problem I think is people are buying these "special offer" boards from Screwfix et al and keeping the unused breakers, they can get a 10 way populated board on offer for less than the 6 way they actually need. they keep the spare breakers but the next offer is often a different type of board, but hey wow, with a bit of bodging those GET breakers can be rammed into a Hager board, can't they? Who cares if it isn't right, I'm not wasting money buying the right ones when I can make those in the van fit!

That all too often is the problem, personally I price a job and the customer either accepts it or goes elsewhere, if a board needs 6 breakers then the customer pays for 6 breakers and he will get the correct ones fitted, yes there are times when I have had to fit a different breaker into a board, but I have to know it fits securely and safely. At the end of the day there is no excuse for trying to save a few quid by ramming the wrong breaker into a board if the right one is readily available.
