Sorted out a faulty light at a rented property over the weekend. Owner has asked me to let her know if anything else needs doing...

Just as a taster - there were 2 metal light fittings in a room, neither of which had earth connections  . One of them had a hand-written note on it stating "do not touch as you will receive a shock - isolate first"

The CU was in the shower room at ceiling height (not on the ceiling;)). I checked the BRB with regards to this, but couldn't find anything specific apart from reference to condensation, which obviously applies in this case.

Anyway, I'm assuming a PIR is required in order to answer the owner's question??? Someone please correct me if this is not the case. Referring to a different post - I don't feel 100% confident enough to do these yet, so will ask someone else if one is required.

Cheers

Likely that the CU was there first and the shower was added after, just had a quick look at the red book as usual not covered under CU, best approach is to look in the context of if in Zones 1,2 or above 2.25m from the floor, pg 69 OSG

Specials good at pulling the red book no's but look in 701

Is this shower room downstairs?

Did it used to be the garage by any chance?

How big is the room?

what are the distances from the shower?

as you say Condensation 522.3.1

Is it too high up the wall?

such as to make if difficult for an elderly person to reach MCBs? accessibility for operation.. 132.12

{IMHO all CU's should be accessible to a person whilst standing on the floor}

Is it more than 60cm from the edge of a shower or bath..

in which case its outside of zones?

Shower room is downstairs, doubt if it was a garage before as too small. At a guess, the room is about 5' x 4'. CU is definitely too high up as I had to stand on something to turn off the breaker - admittedly, I'm only 5'3", but not everyone's a giant!!!

TBH not 100% sure about distance from shower screen. If it's more than 60cm from top edge of shower screen is it ok then?

What else should I be looking for?

I had similar situation with a CU under a leaky sink! could not find any info so asked my regional NICEIC inspector and he told me that there are only regulations applied to socket outlets in these conditions and nothing relating to CU!!!! amazing!! he said was just not good practice:O

PIR'ed a flat once that I had to use a ladder to reach CU and I'm 6'2" - shower isolator was even higher up wall. Needleass to say I failed installation and relocted everything. Suggest you do same with CU in shower, or fit IP rated unit. Out of interest, where's the consumer head?

Gentlemen - obviously that conversation went a bit "down hill" last night. Sorry I missed it! Will only find out more if/when I return to the property.

Slips - just to let you know my daughter is fascinated by the photo next to your name!

im worried about your daughter

So am I.For what its worth, I`d be doing a pir before anything else. Light fittings deffo iffy, and CU doesn`t sound too spicy, either.

Pics`d be good????
Holiday snaps?

Bikini sunbathing?

Steam trains?

Landscapes?

Celebrities walking their dogs?

]:)

Just because it's a lady spark doesn't mean she works in her bikini! :)
It's a bit cold for the bikini, but once the temperatures hit 20 degrees C, watch out everyone :D .
