Is the main switch in the consumer unit used only for isolation or can the main switch also be used as an RCD i.e. are there 2 different types?
There are actually a few applications where an RCD main switch CU would be used..

most common probably the small Garage CU maybe 2 or 3 circuits, max.

e.g. 2-way + RCD

Its the situation where economics of the job say its just not worth while putting two RCD's in..

the inconvenience would be a minimal issue.

Another situation is where a second CU is mounted next the the existing house CU due to lack of space for new circuits..

e.g. a Shower CU. with RCD shower MCB and a-n-other circuit.

4 way unit, as in the unit will take 4 modules. The RCD takes up 2 so there are 2 remaining, and these are protected by the RCD.

Odd way of terming it, usually it would just be called a 2 way CU with RCD incomer.

A small by the way, found a time delayed and trip current adjustable Earth Leakage Relay that is DIN Rail mounted, can't imagine it being used much in domestic installations, although it is 240V AC. Trip Current 100% = 6mA
