i was extending a ring in a kitchen the other day and when i came to do my testing i had a heck of a job identifying the correct neutrals and cpcs because the original wiring wasnt labeled up nor was there any numbers in the cu, to make it worse the cpcs were twisted together and went all round the houses making me have to pretty much unwire everything to un twist them. Now my question is this, if i was to leave the wiring in the cu alone and do the continuity tests on a socket would i get the same readings?

In theory the readings should be the same, but if you are measuring a branch off of a ring then the reading would be different. It might be a better option than disturbing the birds nest of a CU and adding faults. Unless of course you are charging them to sort the mess out. I have a habit of taking as socket off to do the continuity and IR when doing a periodic - doubles up for visual inspection.

insulation testing was my next question. Does it not mess up the rcd tho ? Testing at a socket
