We have an ongoing argument with the management at work regard the issuing of Minor Works certificates for when we change like for like items such as switches, emergency lights, socket fronts etc. I just wanted to know other peoples opinions because surely if you have to issue a MWC for a like for like change, you will be possibly introduction more problems whilst disturbing the cables in the DB to do Ze, PFC and the R1+R2 testing etc?

Of course changing a like for like DB, shower etc would need an installation certificate.

If its a like for like then it is "maintenance work" and as such no MWC is required...................However the MWC is also a safety umbrella for you (thats why I issue one if Ive swapped like for like accessories) should people come chasing at a later date.

I wouls say that if your bosses want a Minor Works cert for accessory replacements then you should fill one out.

For normal accessory replacements I'll do a few checks but I don't issue a MWC, but if the customer (or boss in your case) I'd fill one out.

As M107 said if just like for like replacement then not essential to issue a cert..

See guidance G2.2 page 151 of On-Site-Guide...

which describes; adding lights or sockets, re-routing cables etc..

BUT none of the actual tests you mention are required on the model MWC form on page 393, Appendix 6 of the BIG Green Book!

you will be possibly introduction more problems whilst disturbing the cables in the DB to do Ze, PFC and the R1+R2 testing etc
However it does have boxes for;

Earth continuity, Ins Res L-N, L-E, N-E, Zs, Polarity, and any RCD times..

Which personally I would be testing anyway while I have the

I would agree with the above answers. Sometimes a certificate can make you stand out from the crowd and leave a very good impression on a potential long term client.

We are with NAPIT and their MWC requires all the tests as I described. Ze, PFC etc to be recorded!

I should also mention that I've picked up a couple of school electrical maintenance & now larger works contracts.......why.. because in the past when I was called in because the usual sparks was away I issued MWC certs, they have never had any certs (even EIC's) from the usual spark so when I explained why I issue certs, they booted the other bloke off the books hence I now get all the work.

You could put LIM in any boxes that you didn't do!I mean, what tests are you carrying out - polarity, Zs and maybe RCD?
Now the MWC IS another cert where you can restrict the I&T, though you should put N/A really rather than LIM, and explain why in the little box!

are you compleating certs on line or hand written?

you could ring napit tec line and get them to comfirm what is required for the work you do, however as mentioned if management preference that a cert is to be issued then issue one.

dont know the ins and outs but if your being paid to do some thing that is not dangerous so to speak, then i would do it.

Isolating a whole installation's power to do a Ze reading without any erroneous parallel paths, because you are doing some simple minor works, sounds like the height of daftness gone mad IMHO.
