Hi Folks,

I am looking to get some advice with regards to relocating to the UK from Australia.

I am an electrical testing technician here in Melbourne, I have 5 years experience, 3 from my apprentiship and 2 as a qualified Tester. I have an Advanced Diploma of Electrical Power Systems.

Here in Aus my role is called an electrical tester, but whilst looking for equivalent jobs in the UK and qualifications I can't seem to get the job title or quals.

What do you guys call yourselves and what do I need to get to be qualified?

I have experience in substation rebuilds as site leader and tester in charge on Zone Substation and Terminal stations, I have Tested and supervised all primary and secondary work as part of protection upgrades and Consulted with design team to rectify design errors.

Can anyone give me some advice and also to the rates you can expect to get?

Cheers

Hello Rellik666

or should that be :Y

Over here in UK the main recognised electrical qualifications are those done by the City and Guilds

http://www.cityandguilds.com/uk-home.html

some of their Electrical related courses are:-

possibly contact their help support someone may be able to point you in the right direction.?

Hello Rellik666,

Welcome to the forum,

It's good to have you On-Board. :)

All we have been hearing about of late is UK Electricians wanting to upsticks from the UK and Emigrate to Australia.

In fact, one has done just that, recently.

I can't help you the qualification translation, Sorry.

Maybe E-mail City & Guilds?

Hello and welcome. Just need to find someone to job swap with.

:D

Not sure how things are in Auz currently but in the UK there is a mass shortage of jobs and electricians are hit by it. There is no glut. Also it is very cold. Are you sure you want to come? If the answer is yes, then the North of the country is far superior to the south. We are friendly, they are miserable. They can't even talk properly. If you MUST work down south your best bet would be Norfolk as they are crying out for new blood. Most babies are born with at least and extra finger or two, but you can have the whole family around for a meal with a moderate sized chicken.

:D

Tell us a bit about the electrics over there in exchange :D

Thanks for the welcome what would you like to know?

My partner is British and wants to return home. So not much choice really...

I only know of the HV industry but I will help where I can...

Cheers

Hi Relik666

Welcome to the UK and to this forum. Not sure if I am reading your info correctly but I am guessing you might be working in the Petro Chem Industry. This is where most of my sparking has been done, the main two qualifications for us (not including your apprenticeship papers or equiv) is CompEx (competence in hazardous areas) and HV switching course. We renew ours every 5 years. A lot of technical colleges throughout UK offer the CompEx course. There is various centers throughout the UK that also offer the HV operation and switching course. These two course vary between a 3 to 5 day course. I can give you the names of some of them if required. I can also give you (or anyone else) study notes for elctrical equipment in Haz Areas which is what the CompEx course is about. Just let me know.

Hope this helps Steve

As mentioned, we are not short of electricians, we have a few too many these (if you use the term 'electrician' loosely).

Are you looking for work with another company? If so, you don;t need anything to be an electrician, set of screwdrivers often helps, but there is no requirement for employees to be qualified.

Applaud SmileyApplaud Smiley you have such a way with words :^O :^O

Before you up sticks and come over here looking for a job, I would check that you can get a job now as the rules have been changed for citizans from none EU member states getting a job in this country.

If you are a doctor or something else high up the list of people wanted in this country then you are OK, but if not then you have to go through a vetting procedure.

Thanks folks....Seems like it is not a good time to move....may have to look later in the year....
