Myths of the Trade 1

You can,t pass a neutral through a switch box. This can still be seen in B,ham City Hospital on one of the staircases. Re-tubing new lighting on the stairs a subbie working for us did the switch as illustrated. We said why not just have the switch box in the vertical tube, in the bottom and out the top.

The guy did his nut , really lost it , shouting that you can't have a neutral in the switch . Where do they get these ideas from ?

It amazes me how many guys have come up with this one, Had the same argument with Twin/E .

More to follow later.

if it was a switch live

if its passing through and is a neutral then it stays blue

please admin tell me if my understanding is wrong :_| :_| :_|
No Mate - I should have stated that It was in responce to the OP.

I often pass a neutral through switch boxes.....Even put neutrals into switch box (connected with wago push connector) when using said box as the junction point.

No problem at all.

I was down your way earlier Jhun. Leeks in Cross Hands. :D

I take it that that chap has never looped in and out at the Switch then?! :D

Perhaps I should have said that the feed to the lighting was coming up from the basement Dist. Bd. The neutral would simply pass through the switchbox, no need to tee off as he did.

No need - I took it as that is what you meant.

Jhun - No Mate, I went on my first bounty hunt. ;)

What about those nice switches with neon's in them? Some of them need neutrals.

Ian.

The only reason I can think of for doing it this way is to avoid having more than one phase passing through a switch. A neutral wouldn't be a problem though.
