Need An Explanation

Hope everyone is well

I was asked a question by someone but wasnt really able to answer the science behind it..

If there is 230V at the supply then how are we getting 230V at each socket outlet at the same time ?

example based on domestic scenario.. 10 socket outlets in a kitchen each checked at the same time shows 230V ?

so if someone could help would really appreciate it

Sorry didnt explain the question properly

the gent was basically asking if all 10 sockets show 230V at the same time then that equals 2300V

so how is that possible with only 230V coming in at the mains

he was trying to go into the thoery of it all

Um...........each socket or lamp is wired in parallel across the 230vac. Hence each load receives the same voltage. If you were to wire say two 230V lamps in series then they would each only receive 115vac each and thus be dimmer.

Surely you have done courses covering Practical installation work, wiring regs and electrical science??

Voltage is a potential difference between two reference points... 

If two conductive parts of negligible resistance (live and neutral of a circuit cable) are connected to these reference points then the potential difference will be the same along these conductive parts wherever you chose to read it....

If somewhere along route you have a higher resistance joint....

or a circuit is drawing a lot of current then there will be some voltage dropped along the circuit.

If I fill the bath to 300mm....

then measure the depth at each end of the bath..

and in the middle

I cant say oh the bath is 900mm deep because it is 300mm @ the tap end and 300mm @ the other end

and 300mm deep in the middle as well!!!

Your are correct special location did go through all the electrical science when was in the course ( been a while ive opened the books on electrical science)  but i think i was struggling to explain it to gent who was asking.

its just the example he was using did throw me off a little must admit.

The OP asked about the science behind the question, the formula I provided is the basic scientific equation and would solve all and any questions. Unfortunately as I am doing a degree course, I find such equations rather boring, and find myself asking why do most people not know this rather basic stuff?

In the mid 70s I. Attempted a BSc. Hons in Electrical engineering Science at Salford University

The electrical ,part was fine, HV, Power and Machines, electrical theorey. Then we had to do Mechanics, thermodynamics, and the Maths! Fuff me, the MATHS! Summat like Heavy sides unit step function, laplace transforms, fourier analysis..........i just glazed over and huddled into a foetal position sucking my thumb !

Wish i had paid a bit more attention really! Ah well 3 years were not totally wasted

I found some of the old notes i had taken during lectures. They appeared to be written in a foreign language.

This was back in the day when the Uni had ONE computer, it lived in a remote building. The Mainframe was water cooled as it got so hot, you had to prog it with punch cards

I had ( still have it somewhere, probably worth fuff all ) a Sinclair Scientific calculator. It did not have an "=" button as it worked on something called Polish Notation.....all roots etc were done on log and antilog

Just old!

Yep Kerch, I've even programmed PLC's in Reverse Polish Notation, it is a thing for people of a certain age!
