Our boiler has stopped working and the light on the plug socket on the wall has turned off, i assume, but could very well be wrong, that the fuse has tripped, what kind of fuse would be in that plug socket?

Is it a socket? Sockets don't normally have fuses so if the light is off it has tripped somewhere else.

Is it a plug? Plugs have fuses but don't have a light.

Is it an FCU, Fused connection Unit? These typically have a switch a fuse and a light and the boiler would be connected by a captive flex.

Just look at the old fuse. Typically for just a boiler it would be a 3 amp fuse. but don't be at all surprised if you find it is a 13A fuse because someone in the past was too lazy to put the correct fuse in.

Hi MooCow

They're not very tolerant here of confused posts :-(

"plug socket"- it's either a plug, or it's a socket, not both.

Or as Dave says, it's a FCU.

"the fuse has tripped"
- fuses blow, and have to be replaced.

Breakers trip, and can be reset to On.

But before any fuse replacement you need to find out why the fuse has blown.

Hi Moocow.
If it's a combi boiler then it'll be a 3A or 5A needed.
It's rare for a fuse to blow, so you may well have a different problem.
If you don't have a spare fuse, you could take one out of another plug.
You could also put the suspected blown fuse into another plug, just to see if it's working. You then know that it is a different problem with the boiler.
Also, check your trip switch at your consumer unit (fuse box)..

Good idea! But on my phone, the end of a fuse has only just a big enough area. A smaller area contact won't work. So try with a good one before you rely on this method.
