Chatting to the cable jointers from SSE today, they said the smart meter roll out is iminent but they are short of hands on fitters ...............so SSE are going to be employing soon & the fellers today said the starting wage is said to be

That's BAD news that SSE are about to start mass rollout of Smart meters.

Bad, because most SSE single phase meters have an isolator built in, and from what we hear, the smart meters won't have an isolator.

Very very backward step, just when the seal fairy (up here) had gone into semi retirement due to lack of demand.

Sounds like the seal fairy may well be soon coming back out of semi retirement then. :Salute

I did ask them if the new meters had an isolator ..."dont know mate we've not been shown them yet, but they are supposed to be having a switch on the right side of the front casing"

I also asked about plastic reseals for sparks to use if they pull the service fuse for a board change "yes they are available you just need to ring up for them & give details of the address where they will be used" He thought it was a bag of 5 they sent out.

How times have changed, like I have said in other posts, they gave me 500, years ago and I still have 100's left, probably 490 :D :D

They should all do it, makes sense and no need for seal fairy.

Also bad news because solar panel generated electricity will no longer spin the meter backwards.

Work bit thin on the ground for me atm.

Yep. A 5 day course.

My mate, the meter monkey's response:

"To be honest...none...just common sense really! I was terrified when i started my training, even more on 3 phase, but it is

quite simple! I got all the training....about 6 weeks, and you go out with some-one for 50 meters before you're on your own (with our company)

If they have an electrical background, that's an advantage, but not necessary!

If i can do it, anyone can

Si

1 thing i forgot to mention, smart metering will be different, we haven't had the training for that yet!"
