My BIL (in Wales) was showing me last week how he wired his workshop.

then he said he wired the lights in a "ring main" to stop them dimming. :slap

I watched my BIL spray DAMP START onto a classic "twisted and taped" repair in a "might as well be permanent" length of HO7 RNF running "surface" across a farm yard........quite literally surface. It had subsequently been run over / had the axe through it again. It started off with "......could I stick my "meter" on it". Amazingly the IR did improve!!!

I frequently get asked how "it" should be done and nine times out of ten when they don't like the sound of the work / cost involved the comment is "......but you don't HAVE to do it like that do you?". The fave is definitely ".......I picked up some shed cable at the boot fair / from work / her dad gave it to me and he worked for BT, will it be alright?"

Time to walk away.

I store some of "less used stuff" in my mates barn

He decided to move his 3 phase BFO saw bench from the farm to the barn

Prior to concreting the floor he put a duct in for the cable

To make my life easier....his words not mine.....he put some cable in the duct for me

A piece of 50mm tri rated singles. AND some 50 pair BT cable????

Just...used it as a draw wire

I think my wiring is right.  I removed all my wiring from distribution board and I tested with my screwdriver tester and still the neutral and earth in the distribution board

light up.  Any suggestion that goes wrong.
OK so you have a cable going to every point, that doesn't make it right, please stop peeeing around with dangerous stuff and get a qualified electrician in.

As for the rest of you I think it's time to close this thread before it turns too easy to lampoon the fool - admins where are you?

jpragdi you clearly don't understand the fundamentals of basic electrical theory, the regulars on here are time served apprenticed electricians - that's 4 years of training and still learning. It really is good advice to seek professional help even if that offends your sensibilities, but failure to do so may well risk your life or those of your loved ones. Stop this DIY before someone gets hurt or the Force will certainly be with you!

I have check my lighting installation one by one and they are all working by connecting to an 13 amp extension.  Today, i did the third circuit for 3 outside lighting. i will finish them on monday.  i will not  touch the distribution board  anymore because i think it is faulty or damage  how on earth the db all goes live when switch on.

i will just finish my wiring, then, do plastering, painting, flooring and etc.  I hope my electrician will come next week or i get another one. i have been holed up

in Coventry for nearly three months doing my first buy to let away from London. Anyway, thank you all the comments and replies and I will keep you updated

It's even more shocking that you are DIY wiring for a buy to let.

As a landlord you have a duty of care to provide a safe property for your tenants. DIY wiring without any test equipment does not fit with that responsibility.

As a VERY MINIMUM you need a qualified electrician to test the whole electrical installation and issue an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) and it must say "satisfactory"

So please get it checked out and any faults found corrected by a professional before you let a tenant in the place.

I thought you were going to photograph the DB and post it here?

its only a matter of time before the place burns down, you should just do that now so any future tenant isnt killed when it happens

this is a new refurb property and i will get all the certificates before i let it.
The thing is , you shouldn't..

Any self respecting, professional electrician will only sign for the testing aspect of an installation that they didn't install.... That leaves the design and construction boxes empty....

They should also not submit a Part P notification as it against the scheme rules to notify something that your company didn't install.

So should the preverbial brown stuff hit the rotating blowy device then your neck will be firmly on the block (as it were)
