Hello, i wonder if anyone can help. Im doing the electrics in a building that the owner will be having a shop/office on the gnd floor and two flats upstairs. Its just getting a lick of paint and the kitchens reorganized, but iv been asked to put in some smokes.

I get the feeling that it will be a bit more than that legally?

I understand there are a few different standards like L1 L2 L3 etc but i dont know the difference yet

My idea up to now is to use Aico hard wired smoke alarms, as i have seen you can use these with call points and a switch that will test hush and locate the active alarm. This will be done on 3core 1.5 and not firetuf as the alarms have batterys. Does this sound ok? or is this a can of worms?

Can of worms...

Personally I'd say a panel alarm for the shop & common spaces with sounders in each flat and then a domestic system in each flat..

TBH I'd get an alarm engineer in to design... you do the install then get them back to test & commision

Concur with Noz - the shop is likely to require grade C (LC1 or LC2), dependant on usage and FRA.

The flats are easy enough - grade D, (LD3) will be okay, although you would need, at a minimum, sounders for the grade C in each flat. Further, you`d prob. need a heat alarm in the main living accom. of each flat, connected to the grade C in the shop. Dependant on size of shop, the grade C may have to be uprated to a B, to echo Noz, get a fire design company in. Unless you have full approved contractor status (or equivalent) & registered for 5839(1):2002, you wouldn`t have a leg to stand on if anything happened.

n.b. the shop system, by its nature, will require FP200 or equiv, as a minimum. Enhanced (MICC) may be specified.

BS5839 Pt 1

L=Life

P=Property

M=Manual

Usually the insurance company will detail if they want L1, L2, L3, P1, P2, M etc. The flat and shop could even need there own panels and a link between them. Its best if its down for BS5839 pt 1 to get a FA firm to spec it out
