We are currently doing them. 3 men 2 days, but there is alot goes in them. Standard stuff plus outside lights front and back, TV points in every bedroom, living room and dining room. All coaxes run to loft space. Most have separate downstairs loo that has a new extract fan to core and fit. Out building with 1 x dsso and a bulkhead fitting switched from hallway. All chopped in, no trunking except for drop to CU and risers (mains and tv) to loft. doing 2 a week then boss has us catching up on a few private bits on the 5th day. he is pushing them for 2.5 a week but the contractors don't want properties half done left over weekend.
I bet he is !!

Gav you're mad mate. I'd be looking at another profession it it came down to what you do. Sod that.

What other options have I got? I'm trying to get my foot in the door somewhere trying to achieve my goals. I work really hard, whilst attending collage 2 nights a week too. The economy is rubbish at the moment and I'm not the ideal apprentice because of my age.

Gavin I know exactly how you feel. 6 years in and I'm still in the same situation. And not fully qualified either as boss made it so I couldn't attend night college. 8 - 9pm finishes etc. It's is very annoying..........But it's the sh!t world we live in today. God help our young.
Not all bosses are the same, my first apprentice is now 21, and fully qualified including 2391 or whatever it is these days. 2nd apprentice got himself sacked for being a lazy sod, 3rd apprentice has just started - going OK so far. They're happy, I'm happy. Not only have I trained them well, the result is I have loyal staff to return my investment in time and money, as well as having given a young lad for fairly crap background a real chance in life. Find another employer Barx, or sneak off and do courses yourself, then leave.

I tried doing courses myself, I did 2330 lv 2 on evenings. Was on lv3 but got kicked as ended working late for months and couldn't make college. Now, new government changes funding guidlines and I cannot get funded. Nor can I afford it. Got myself registered on NVQ 3.

I cannot get other employment that will pay same as I'm not qualified and I need this amount as I'm the only income to the household. catch 22.

I have a couple of lucky dips on tonights Euro millions, when I get the check I will pay for your course.

I work as part of a 3 man squad we get on average 600 a house require per day. The other day we had a conduit house. Kitchen ring up ring down ring up and down lights with smokes and fans. Cooker in done tidied and away by 3pm. Also test every circuit before power up. There is no such thing as cant gentlemen. When we do trunking jobs yea it's not very nice but its done a lot safer than some jobs I've seen without. Also we fish across to ceilings as much as poss and use cupboards etc for switches. Remember any electrical joint must be accessible. So how do u do that in a downstairs flat without making a complete mess of the property?

What do you mean you use cupboards for switches ? And if its a rewire, why on earth would you have to have any joints , accessible or not ?!

I always enjoy a few joints on my rewires ... Normally towards the end or nothing gets done lol :slap

Every accessory is a 'joint'.
You have one at every accessory ffs I better come and work with you lol :slap

Ha that's funny Matty

Read my comment in context, why would he say ' remember all joints have to be accessible, how do you do that in a downstairs flat' he was hardly talking about ceiling roses and socket outlets. In fact I don't know what he's on about,

We come down cupboards with drops and through walls to have a less visible trunking as possible. Joints as in when rewiring a downstairs flat the old conduit systems are run in the upstairs flat therefor the work has to be either done in trunking or all wraggled in and tbh we all know councils have no money and to redecorate would cost a fortune. And this because its a rewire there should be no joints? So we aren't aloud to run all cables to a JB in the attic now? It's a proven method that is still used just not in downstairs flats. There are a lot of members on this that are very negative towards this kind of work I don't understand it we should all be encouraging each other to be making money the best way we can in times like these. There is nothing wrong with one day rewires.

I have to sympathise with Gavin , hes doing the best he can in the worst economic climate since even Steptoe was a lad .

Doing Council house rewires like that is soul destroying ,cheap labour, only one person will be on an earner and I bet he,s not still working at 8.00PM . And did Gavin say they have to wait for the pack to arrive , the gaffers' taking the pi$$ , but Gavin is earning a few quid , hes' gaining experience and he's still doing his college ( I presume )

Its not the best but hopefully something better may turn up .

Or he do what my neighbour's two sons' do ...see between brackets ( ................................................ ) and smoke pot all Saturday night .

What are you saying ... for a 5 day week you're earning

I agree, provided it's a very tidy job, all the work fully complies with the 17th edition regs, and maintainability is good. Personally I would only use JB's where absolutely necessary and wire lighting 'three plate'. I would'nt want to be called back to a fault and have to go into the attic and lift up sheets of loft insulation looking for a junction box.

Yea that's right if we do 5 houses we can make good money. I would not be doing it for 60 a shift!! Our jobs are checked randomly by nic and not one has came back to haunt. There are many different ways to wire a house and tbh we could all debate on which way is best but tbh if it's safe at works does it matter?
