I need to get a new laptop & haven't got a clue what to look for, prices between £200-1500 with single or double overhead underhangs and triple layer cogs ?

I dont play games on it, i want a large screen . I have been told DELL, Any recommendations ?

Lenovo, Toshiba, Apple, Acer, in no particular order, NEVER Dell, or HP, & there is another but I can't remember.

However, these are field service based decisions where you are looking to take the machine on site.

In which case TBH the Mac is at the bottom of the list as it is very fragile, IMHO.

However, mine does go on the shop floor with me.

We had LOADS of problems with Dell's with our field service guys and our software and reliability in hostile environments!

These did not happen with Lenovo, Toshiba or Acer!...

The software would not run on Mac's so that was not an option.

Ive had a dell for over 10years, been all over with me, and been banged about more than average Id say,

I have been known to be a bit of a traveller before I met present wife, so its been dragged around in a rucksack for a few years.

its still working, albeit minus all its keys cos 'Albert Jnr' thought it was a good game to pick them off one day,  headbang

its in the shed with a USB keyboard playing music/watching DVDs/streaming TV/etc etc etc,

oh, its a bog basic thing that I bought back then, but still running fine [just about] on Ubuntu,

No.

I have levelled off @ 500Gb disk 4Gb ram, & the processor depends on what you can get for the money.

i7 being the best at the moment I believe.

My laptop is a Dell inspiron 1525. Had it about 5 years now i think and never really had any issues. The battery is now dead and binned so it's constantly plugged in, but it never goes anywhere anyway. I would go with an core i3 or i5 processor. Really good processor. You need to be careful these days as a lot of the cheaper laptops are using cut down processors originally designed for netbooks. They don't have half the grunt.

The main laptop I use at home is a 17.3" Acer 7535G running Win7 since my Samsung R530 became "unwell"..............which I've still not fixed (though it runs Ubuntu fine)! The Acer is good but runs a bit hot on the old lap after a while - also with the bigger screen quite heavy! The Samsung was a dream though for everyday use, ergonomic, reliable, light etc.

At work it's an OLD Dell Latitude CPX running Win 2000 Pro! I dropped it once from a few meters up on a machine. Case smashed up, had a USB stick in at the time which snapped off at the socket and damaged that. The then IT dept offered me a new laptop but I declined on the basis of I'd probably be dropping it again! They sent me a gutted Latitude and I swapped everything over i.e original motherboard etc. I now have a laptop with no USB port.....I use a PCMIA card. Swappable CD / 3.5" drives, battery long dead, the fan doesn't work. YET the thing keeps going in all weathers come rain or shine! Dell seem tough IMO. Only really use it for Micrologix stuff.
