New lighting electric installation question

The more I look at it, the more odd it looks. I can't see a neutral connection to the supply head. Is that really the DNO's supply head, or has your sparky installed that. Looks very odd to me. A better picture (with the flap up) might help.

cant see the meter though, although a digital meter could easily be hidden under the cover

not sure about the neutral and all that stuff, i just know he fitted all that onto the wall, the chipboard, they big grey fuse, the consumer unit and a smaller white switch and he left the space in the top left for me to call the electric people to get a meter.

so.. your stealing electric at the moment?

your sparky cannot touch anything to do with the service head or the meter (unless its a private supply)

It sounds to me like it's not live yet?

It's NOT normal for the sparky to connect the DNO's big grey fuse though. Quite often the DNO will give you the cable to lay in ready for them, but it's normally the DNO's guy that comes and connects the big grey fuse. Then a few days later (new system up here) A second guy will come and fit the meter.

Up to that point, there's NOTHING connected to the output of the big grey fuse.

your sparky connecting that just does not sound right.

EDIT when I copy the previous picture and brighten the image, I can see the neutral and earth. The original picture was too dark.

I wonder if he's put an rcd to protect his cable to that fuse, as its within the wall. Could be swa though.

Sounds like he's expecting there to be a separate supply to the extension and the DNO supplied the cable.

I think what should happen is the DNO will come and connect the supply head, and then split the existing supply to feed out to the extension.

They might not be too chuffed when they find your sparky has done part of their job for them (and missed out the meter)

well i guess i will just have to wait it out. I will ask him myself tomorrow and see what he has planned. I'm glad i asked now.

Hello Mickey Goldmill, your concerns are not uncommon and you are right to question what is and is not being done. It is often difficult for electricians to speak in lay terms to clients so that they understand what is being done.

I spend as much time that is required with my clients to reassure them that they are in safe hands, I give them my mobile number and allow them to cal me at any time, in fact today I had a call from a client who's install was carried out last year, she had a concern that I was able to sort over the phone.

If you are having doubts or concerns you must raise them with the electrician, his answers should ease your mind, if however you are still not sure this forum could help you ask the right questions, and give you a general opinion based on your posts.

One thing I would say is you are the owner responsible for your installation, so ask as many questions you need to ask to satisfy yourself its being done right.

The cablng is also very untidy and poorly secured. If that is the finished installation I wouldn't allow it to be left without at least some tidying up and making pretty.

As others say, okay IF fitted in an enclosure.BUT on a new installation (which is really what this is) there is really no excuse for joining cables like that. If it's been planned properly, all junctions will either be at the light fittings or the light switches.

Might be for a load of d/l's, whole job looks a bit scruffy though
