Hi all. I'm a maintenance spark who is looking to convert to domestic.

I've been helping out a local sparks for a while free of charge to gain practices and form experiences.

A friend has asked me to wire a house for him and I'd like some advice but the spark I have given my free time to won't talk to me as he says I'm competition, but I was honest with him from the outset when he accepted my free help.

Is there anyone who is willing to assist please.

How to wire a house? Actually, welcome to the forum, as Sharpend's question implies it is far easier for forum members to answer specific questions. Unless you are expecting members to give up half their Sunday afternoon writing a step by step guide for a stranger. Which I doubt anyone would do. How are you intending to meet the legal obligations for Part P compliance, certifications and notification? Or are you in Scotland?

Hmmm I didn't ask my queries as I wanted to gauge reaction to my request. I fully appreciate the frustrations of part p not controlling "handymen" buying their gear from B&Q and undercutting as they don't register/insure. Wondered if some may feel the need to vent hence my cautious approach.

I have 2330 level 3 and 2391 ( my HNC wasn't of interest to part p bodies) and I'm time served including domestic but that was a long time ago. Practises change and I'm using this as my part p assessment so I need current thoughts.

The house has a void under ground floor. I was wondering should I protect from vermin as the grill vents have holes in them? They don't want to fix them by the way.

Also they don't want mains smokes as they are chain smokers! As far as I can see 7671 doesn't force them and no other building control consent has been sought.

Similarly they don't want a bathroom fan. I don't think I have a part p argument to force them.

Probably not the best assessment house with these odd omissions but it's there house.

Can anybody see assessor pulling me up?

Wiring regulations and building regulations are NOT retrospective..

i.e.

Theres is no obligation to have to undertake work that was not required when the property was previously rewired...

BUT...

If you choose to do some extra work..

That work MUST comply with current wiring & building regulations.

So

As you say ..

smoke detectors are only an advised good practice when doing a rewire...

Statutory obligation due to building regs when doing NEW BUILDS....

But not statutory on old properties!

The above point is also valid for ventilation & bathroom fans!

Re under floor void.. vermin...

firstly if you say this will be an assessment job then you will have 17th edition C&G's

and a current copy of BS7671...

Think your question would come under..

External influences?

What do you think may be required after reading this guidance?

tip..

Vermin can get ANYWHERE in a property.

between floors..

stud walls,

airing cupboards

loft space....

Do you propose added protection for these locations??

Rather asking questions to prompt you to find the answer yourself, as most college lecturers do.

What do you do as a "maintenance spark"? new installations, repairs, or just change light bulbs. We don't yet know how much you know.

I am unclear how you are coming to these conclusions? All i can see is some members trying to clarify what you are trying to answer. Giving some answers and asking you to think through some other points for further discussion. If you are expecting other people to just give answers without asking clarification of some points, especially with a vague opening post, then I fear you have unrealistic expectations.

Ive looked at the books before I posted and came to I think the same findings. But you peeps have more experience of assessors than I so wanted to avoid trip ups.

Again handled this clumsily.

Welcome to the forum. I have wired under downstairs floors shouldn't be a problem but on refurbs I prefer to chase out the walls. At the end of the day its what the customer wants to pay.

Yep cheers. Friend wants minimum plastering and he wants to do ch at same floor board rip out. Obviously if I see sharp edges etc I'll protect. Just being ott trying to prepare maybe too much..

That's the trouble with friends and mates, they expect you to be able to work wonders for half the price!

You have to do what you have to do to get his electrickery where he wants it, never mind what else he wants.

It's a priviledge to have Specs comment on any thread you start. He always gives a comprehensive answer and has an excellent knowledge of the regs.

And whats wrong with changing light bulbs. - as long as the light bulb wants to change that is. - By the way bulbs grow lamps glow....
