All this insistance on N I membership annoys me,considering that they are not what they used to be and some people still insist you join them and no other.I had an instance a couple of years ago on the farm,a woman from the insurance came out to do an inspection and she went through everything, all was fine until she came to the electrics, "there appears to be no test or inspection certificates" she said, I replied "yes, there in that folder marked electrical I and T documents", she looked through it then said "oh,these are no good, they need to be by an N I contractor" to which I replied "look love,I designed it,I built it and I tested it,there's nothing in law that says I need to be a member of any scheme,so if you're saying I do then that's a case of restrictive practice which is illegal". She thought for a minute then replied "yes, well all the paperwork seems to be in order, thanks very much,we'll see you next year" and left.

A mate of mine had a similar issue at his yard, there was an old cable overhead on a catenary,it was cut off at both ends outside the building and you could see that it obviously didn't go anywhere.Well he got a visit from the local council, apparently they'd decided to inspect all the units on the estate, they didn't like the wire and told him he'd have to get a document from an electrician to state that it was dead,he said he'd just take it down but oh no,they'd seen it and they wanted paperwork,he said it wasn't a problem as he knew an electrician (me) they insisted it came from an N I registered one.In the end he got a local chap out who charged him £50,the laugh was that the guy said it was all BS and advised him to put in a complaint, which he did,the result was that he got a letter of apology,a £50 refund and the person who did the inspection was hauled over the coals, common sense it would seem prevailed at last.

My response is ONLY 19,000?

How many sparks are there in the UK? I would bet a LOT more than 19,000 which suggests only a very small number are actually registered with a scam.

I think I saw a total of self employed sparks once , somewhere , and thought as you have ,  theres more out than in .

Back in the day before all, this DI malarky Contractors were a bit afraid of the NIC man coming

He would rock,up with HIS OWN METERS AND TOOLS .      He would also have been on the Sarcasm Course...same as the one run by the people who train Traffic Cops

different now!
Ah  They must go on the same course as in the Midlands then .

Tell you what @Evans Electric

It's a lot more involved than NICEIC membership, :C
Whats involved then Stepps , I thought they were a iy more easy going  for some reason. ?

Although theres quite a long list of requirements for ELECSA / NIC     . As I said earlier they even checked out my mains tester .

They never ask about the warranty stuff , which I've ignored since day one TBH

Asked to go online to the ELESA site and checked if I was notifying stuff,  I noticed.
