Just heard this on R4 . Last year a guy fitted a couple of osprey with new American transmitters which the satelites can track and he can monitor their whereabouts. He names the one Nimrod.

Anyway, while the rest of us are trying to find our way about the country with our satnavs and A to Z maps, Nimrod decides to return to last years nest, he,s wintering in Morocco , so he sets off on his own out over the Atlantic on a 35 hour 1st stage of his trip without landing. Over Spain ,then from the usual 500 ft he uses air currents over the Bay of Biscay to rise to 5500 ft and air currents take him up to 100 Km/hr .

Across France, over the English Channel and rests in southern England.

He then flies the length of England and rests in Dumfries .

The guy is tracking him all the way, via the satelites , Nimrod then sets off on the last leg to the West Highlands, the guy knows where he is heading for and is waiting there.

Eventually Nimrod appears, the little aerial can be seen on his back, he circles round a few times then , unbelievably , lands on the nest he built there last summer. B-) Wow !

Sometimes natures wonders make you feel quite small. :|

i read it last time. still a long way to fly and go to the same spot he came from! imaging finding your way from a random place somewhere in cornwell to somewhere is scotland and back without any satnav!

Homing pigeons do the same thing & scientists have never worked out exactly how.

I just dug this up from last year 'cos I like it !!

Im glad Nimrod hasnt got Seamus, my t watnav, as by now he'd have been sent the wrong way down a dozen one way streets, a couple of thousand miles out of his way for no apparent reason and ended up in the middle of a field in Sidcup.

Seriously tho, mother natures a marvel and no mistake
